Viper Comics Takes A Bite Out Of Digital

This is the year for something old and something new at Viper Comics. Earlier this year, the Texas-based publisher enjoyed an uber-successful relaunch of classic comics Inspector Gadget and Johnny Test at this year’s Comic Con. But Viper will round out 2011 at the other end of the distribution spectrum: digital.

Viper is leaping into the digital revolution in two ways. First, they will make their library of existing books-from oldies like Gadget to cult favorites like Middleman-available in digital format. This will ensure fans have ready access to their favorites at any time and a whole new fan base can discover Viper books they might have missed. And second, Viper will begin to create a new line of comics expressly for digital distribution.

Beginning with Five Senses, a gritty crime story about a murder witness bent on solving the crime while trying to keep the mysterious killer from stealing his five senses, Viper’s entire catalog of comic books will be available in digital as well as paper formats. For Mettam, this new medium hits close to home as he is the author of Viper’s Halloween digital release, Nightmares in Oz, a modern-and pretty gnarly-spin on the Oz tales we all thought we knew.

A Best Seller in Japan: Stargazing Dog

Daddy is that main character in this remarkably simple, unassuming and yet very poignant little manga. He is down and out, his wife has left him, his daughter rebellious, he’s even been laid off. And so, suddenly even homeless, he decides to take off to wherever.

And it is this very element that makes this story so compelling. Dogs are indeed the most unquestioningly loyal of our pets. Daddy at least has his stargazing dog, one who looks to the heavens wistfully, innocent devotion his only key in life.

The story is craftily divided in two. The 1st part tells of Daddy’s journey as ‘narrated’ by the innocent Dog. The 2nd narrates the point of view of a social worker who must investigate what happened to him. He himself has vivid memories of his dog when he was young and how he took his devotion for granted, even found it somewhat pathetic after a while. As we see him working his way through Daddy’s story, his last recollection of his own dog on its last leg, playful and devoted to the last, haunts him. This is about innocence in front of a cruel world and the Dog is cathartic. For more information, go to www.nbmpub.com.

Atomic Robo Vol 6 #3
Written: Brian Clevinger
Art: Scott Wegener
Colors: Ronda Pattison
Letters: Jeff Powell

Story: “Atomic Robo and the Ghost of Station X”

Why aren’t you reading this book? Is THE RESET ADVENTURES OF CAPEMAN really all that compelling? Look, I’ll break it down for you. We’ve got a robot who’s also a scientist. He fights monsters, sometimes Nazis, a mobile pyramid once, the planet Mars kinda, and also Stephen Hawking (though to be honest that was more of a metaphorical battle). His arch enemies include a brain in a jar, a time traveling dinosaur who isn’t, and the spirit of Thomas Edison. Yeah, okay, this is the third issue in the sixth series, but it’s still a great jumping on point. Check it: First issue Robo tried to rescue some astronauts. Second issue it all went horribly wrong. This issue Robo tracks down the true culprits!
